Members are involved in every aspect of running Club Stairways. They greet visitors and give tours, plan and prepare meals, do data entry, clean and maintain our building, and organize our fund raising efforts. Members also serve on our board of directors and are involved in administration.
The assumption that Club Stairways belongs to and is run by members (who work alongside a small but dedicated staff) is unique. It is a powerful motivator that leads inexorably to pride in the clubhouse and to recovery for members.
Opportunities are plentiful at Club Stairways. For many members active engagement in the work of the clubhouse leads to a sense of purposefulness and achievement. Club Stairways is a real community that genuinely needs the interests and talents of its membership. Meaningful work in one of the work units of Club Stairways sustains the clubhouse and serves as a catalyst for satisfying personal relationships.
The work of running the Club Stairways is divided into three main work units: the Business Unit, the Clerical Unit, and the Café Unit.
The Business Unit, centered around the main entrance, is responsible for the welcoming atmosphere of the Clubhouse. It is a diverse work area that includes the management of the reception and locker area, maintenance of Club Stairways grounds, the snack bar and kitchen, the audio/visual area which includes in-house broadcasts and photography, as well as coordination of social recreation activities for the evening and weekend program.
Members working in the Clerical Unit are responsible for the administration of the Clubhouse. Duties include: coordinating the employment and education programs, managing the membership database, producing the Clubhouse newsletter, compiling all statistics for evaluation, coordinating intake activities, answering the busy Clubhouse telephone, coordinating Clubhouse tours and conducting day-to-day clerical and administrative
The Café Unit is responsible for providing meals and refreshments to the membership. Specific duties include meal planning, buying, preparing and serving food, working the cash register, managing inventory, cash tallying as well as clean up and maintenance of the café.
